DIN ISO 10872: Nematode Toxicity Test

Water quality - Determination of the toxic effect of sediment and soil samples on growth, fertility and reproduction of Caenorhabditis elegans (Nematoda)

Ecossa has long-time experience with the standardized toxicity test using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (DIN ISO 10872). The toxicity test was developed by Ecossa for testing in aqueous media, sediments, soil and waste.

The advantages of this test are:

  • Nematodes are sediment/soil dwellers
  • test can be performed in solid and aqueous media
  • short test duration: 96h
  • chronic test, as a whole generation cycle is covered
  • sublethal endpoints (growth, fertility, reproduction)
  • low amounts of test item required (only 0.5 g per replicate)

The test can be applied to assess the toxicity of:

  • Environmental samples: contaminated sediment, soil, groundwater, waste water, elutriates, waste
  • Chemicals: pesticides, biocides, REACH-chemicals and nanoparticles in water, sediment and soil
